Catch, Photograph, Release: Handling Fish Well
Every trout we release is a promise to the next angler — maybe you, next season. Fish handled well swim off strong; fish handled carelessly often don't survive the hour. Our crew follows a strict protocol, and we teach it on every trip.
Keep 'em wet
Land fish quickly on appropriate tackle, keep the net in the water, and unhook with forceps while the fish stays submerged. If you want a photo, lift for three seconds — literally count — then back under.
Wet hands, no gloves
Dry hands and fabric gloves strip the slime coat that protects trout from infection. Wet your hands first, cradle — never squeeze — and never lay a fish on rocks or boat decks for a picture.
Revive facing upstream
Hold the fish gently in calm current until it kicks out of your hands on its own. If it rolls over, give it more time. A released fish should leave like it was never caught.
